HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRED ASTAIRE! Fred Astaire was born on May 10, 1899. He was named the fifth Greatest Male Star of All Time by the American Film Institute. He is particularly associated with Ginger Rogers, with whom he made ten films.
Gene Kelly, another major innovator in filmed dance, said that “the history of dance on film begins with Astaire”. Beyond film and television, many classical dancers and choreographers, Rudolf Nureyev, Sammy Davis, Jr., Michael Jackson, Gregory Hines, Mikhail Baryshnikov, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins among them, also acknowledged his importance and influence.

FILM HISTORY: Tunisian Film Pioneer Albert Samama Chikly (1872-1933).
In 1897 Albert Samama Chikly, a Tunisian Jew, together with a photographer named Soler, organized the first screenings of Lumière films in a Tunis shop. The original twelve minute program of films, bolstered by some magic lantern views, included such familiar titles as ‘La Sortie de l’Usines’ and ‘L’Arrivée d’un Train’ (Arrival of the Train). In common with the introduction of film in many non-Western countries, Tunisia was offered its first films from a businessman who also introduced other modern novelties; in Chikly’s case, the bicycle, radio and X-rays. Unusually, Chikly was to persevere in his film interests. He was active as an actuality filmmaker in Tunisia and France, filming over Tunis from a balloon in 1908, and filming for the French army at Verdun during the First World War. He also took Auto-chrome color photographs during the war.
He knew the The Lumière Brothers, Abel Gance and Rex Ingram, who wanted his actress daughter Haydée Chikly to work in Hollywood. Chikly made the first Tunisian fiction film, a short entitled “Zohra” made in 1922, and then the first Tunisian feature film, “Ain el-Ghezal” ou la fille de Carthage (The Girl from Carthage), in 1924, a remarkable achievement when African film-making in general was almost non-existent. Both films starred his daughter, who continued acting in Tunisian films into the 1990s.
His tombstone bears the epitaph: “Tireless in curiosity, reckless in courage, audacious in enterprise, obstinate amidst trials, resigned to misfortune, he leaves his friends.”

No, I don’t want to hear about the recent breakthrough you made in your incredible acting class. You know, the one that “changed your life.”
Actors, as a breed, have a reputation of being a bit, well, self-involved. There are some good reasons for it, to be certain. We have to think about ourselves a lot. We have to measure and evaluate our feelings, gauge our marketability, bring our innermost sensitivities into the open air for all to see. No other art more fully relies on the exploration of the self—physical, mental, emotional, spiritual—to create. Still, that doesn’t excuse you from playing nice with others, from being polite and showing a genuine interest in the people and places around you.
Self-involved actors are missing out on the very material they need to grow their craft. Actors must synthesize what they see in the world, pulling inspiration from daily life and re-purposing it into dynamic performances on stage or screen. That doesn’t mean just focusing on dramatic events or exciting people. Small, mundane, but truthful details can transform a character. Without the influences of “real life,” an actor quickly becomes a boring performer, as well as a boring person.
Marlon Brando said, “An actor’s a guy who, if you ain’t talking about him, he ain’t listening.”
Don’t be that guy!

New Rules for the Leading Man: Movies + TV: GQ
Most of the so-called professional actors these days, are just overrated & overpaid hacks. For example, let’s look at the contemporary “actors”, they simply lack depth, can’t act their way out of a wet paper bag but because they just look nice [have nice faces] they get parts, but no sense of emotion nor heart (just like the movies in general being made today).
I’m worried of what movie “acting” [a joke already] is going to be like in 10 years from now, when all you’ve got is scatterbrained actors and actresses, empty pretty shells who either blubber like idiots or scream like retards cause they can’t act, and rely to much on special effects and technology to look decent on screen. Just watch the old classics, you’ll see the difference and understand!
They can’t get into character in the ways that the old actors could.

Today 30 years ago: “Beat It” reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (February 26, 1983). It is the third single from the singer’s sixth solo album, Thriller (1982). Eddie Van Halen was hired to add the song’s distinctive overdriven guitar solo, but was prevented by his record label from appearing in the music video.
A Platinum-certified 45, “Beat It” was awarded two Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards and was inducted into the Music Video Producers Hall of Fame. “Beat It” (along with the song’s music video) propelled Thriller into becoming the best-selling album of all time. The single was certified platinum in 1989. Rolling Stone magazine placed “Beat It” in the 344th spot on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. “Beat It” was also ranked No. 81 in Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time”.
The music video for “Beat It” helped establish Jackson as an international pop icon. The video was Jackson’s first treatment of black youth and the streets. Both “Beat It” and “Thriller” are notable for their “mass choreography” of synchronized dancers, a Jackson trademark.
The video, which cost Jackson $150,000 to create after CBS refused to finance it, was filmed on Los Angeles’ Skid Row—mainly on locations on East 5th Street —around March 9, 1983.
