Could a very strong position of religion be a cause of poverty also?

Why some third world countries have already succeeded in breaking the spiral of underdevelopment and poverty, but others have not succeeded in doing it? One important even if often completely overlooked factor just could be the position of religion in these societies. This factor is so seldom brought up in discussion maybe because it is seen as not ‘politically correct’ subject.

However, for example Yemen, Sudan, Guatemala or Paraguay have one common denominator. In all these societies, old-fashioned, change-resistant and patriarchal religions have a markedly powerful position. They are far more religious than in those former dirt poor third world nations like Taiwan, South Korea or Thailand. These countries have been transformed from dirt poor into into economic success stories during the last few decades.

Tunisia's economy; Losing direction

Oh, how predictable this is!! Tunisia Losing “Economic” direction? Tunisia didn’t have a general direction to begin with! They overthrew President Ben Ali (or should I say, He resigned), and that’s about it.. What a waste of a “Revolution”, more an illusion! Tunisia is precisely what we can expect - we saw it in South Africa. Economically the countries degrade once they have democracy, but become more stable. Stability without Prosperity (can’t have it all in Tunisia). Keep praying ;)

Interior Region Development at the Core of Tunisia’s Plan for $100 Million in US Aid

With the World Economic troubles around the world, my beloved Tunisia is drowning further down the drain (with NO economy, NO employment, NO real leadership.. and NO future in sight), the United States is coming to the rescue as usual (and perhaps bagging a little) of what used to be Tunisia, Tunisia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that development programs in the country’s interior will be a priority as the Tunisian government spends money (they don’t have) freed up by $100 million in US aid – still pending congressional approval. The cash transfer was announced only yesterday in a press release by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and would provide Tunisia with “short-term fiscal relief” from its debt obligations to the World Bank and the African Development Bank.

Makes you wonder… This is the way it is for millions of people, question is, does the U.S. really have a higher living standard than the rest of the world? Not anymore. The US has dropped to rank 12th behind countries such as Canada, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, etc. who have affordable health-care, a strong middle class, some poverty and a wealthy class that doesn’t mind paying a little more in taxes. Corporate greed supported by the Republican Party is bent on wiping out the middle class in the U.S. In Argentina most families own their own homes. In the U.S. most homes are owned by banks. It’s a mess, and far from over.

S&P downgrades 9 eurozone countries - CBS News

Hooray for Germany! (AP) Ratings agency Standard & Poor’s downgraded the government debt of France, Austria, Italy and Spain on Friday. But it kept Germany’s at the coveted AAA level. The downgrades deal a blow to the eurozone’s ability to fight off a worsening debt crisis. All told, S&P cut its ratings on nine eurozone countries. The rating agency ended France and Austria’s triple-A status. It also lowered Italy’s and Spain’s by two notches and did the same for Portugal and Cyprus. Additionally, S&P cut ratings on Malta, Slovakia and Slovenia. S&P had warned 15 European nations in December that they were at risk for a downgrade. The United States, the world’s largest economy, was downgraded over the summer of 2011.
